Handwoven Shawls and Throws

If you think a handwoven scarf is great, the luxury of a handwoven shawl or throw tops it several times over. At least twice as wide as a scarf, shawls and throws provide twice as much softness, twice as much comfort, twice as much warmth, and twice as much beauty.

My shawls and throws are so popular, I can't weave them fast enough! But never fear - I'm happy to make one just for you. Contact me and we'll discuss the colors and fabrics, sizes and patterns, that will make your perfect handwoven shawl or throw.

rayon chenille handwoven shawl-frost

Rayon Chenille Handwoven Shawl-Frost

Rayon chenille begs to be touched. It is so soft and luxurious that you will want to wrap it around yourself every day. The natural sheen enhances the colors and draws admiring looks.

This shawl is handwoven from a yarn that was hand painted by a fiber artist to my specifications. A wonderful blend of rich purple and cool frosty green, this one-of-a-kind shawl will look terrific on most skin tones. The weight is great for most seasons, including cool, summer evenings.

This hand made shawl is 17" wide and 72" long, plus double-twisted fringe on both ends. For best results, I recommend hand washing this shawl in warm water, gently squeezing out excess water by wrapping it in a towel, and laying it flat to dry. You can then fluff it in a dryer if you'd like.

If you tend toward the subtle, understated look while you're warm and cozy, this handwoven shawl is for you. Hand painted just for Second Wind, this shawl ranges from solid silver through delicate lilacs with a thin stripe of royal purple along one edge.

It looks great over your black dress, draped around your shoulders when you're wearing your skinny jeans and a great top, or wrap yourself in luxury while you're relaxing on the sofa.

This hand made shawl is 17" wide and 72" long, plus double-twisted fringe on both ends. For best results, I recommend hand washing this shawl in warm water, then wrapping it in a towel and gently pressing out excess water, and laying it flat to dry. You can then fluff it in a dryer if you'd like.

rayon rainbow handwoven shawl

Rayon Rainbow Handwoven Shawl

Looking for rainbows without the warmth? This lightweight rayon shawl is for you! Drape of an even dozen colors around your shoulders when all you want is the lightest touch. Handwoven in a twill pattern, the colors of this hand made shawl are a bit more subdued than those in the rayon chenille shawl (below), yet they retain the soft sheen typical of rayon.

This delicate shawl is a generous 17" wide x 72" long, plus double-twisted fringe, allowing you to show your fashion sense with your favorite wrapping style.

This fine gauge handwoven rayon shawl should be gently hand laundered and laid flat to dry. You can press with a cool iron if desired.

About Shawls

When I was growing up, the only people who wore shawls were old women. Grandma age. The same women who wore babushkas and house dresses to sweep their walks.

I'm not sure when that changed - perhaps when pashminas became popular. In any case, shawls now grace the shoulders of women of all ages.

A handwoven shawl is functional, keeping you warm when it's chilly indoors or out. But much more than that, a shawl adds grace and beauty to your finest dress. Wear a handmade shawl to your favorite evening celebration: prom, New Year's Eve, the theater, or just out for martinis with friends. You'll turn heads with your style!

And who's to say whether that large handwoven piece is a shawl or a throw? Only you! Wear it for a shawl today and use it for a throw tomorrow. Versatility is the name of the game for these handwoven throws...or handwoven shawls...you decide.

silk & linen handwoven shawl-lilacs

Silk & Linen Handwoven Shawl-Lilacs

Springtime in the northeast brings cool breezes, warm rains, and a stunning array of flowers. This handwoven shawl, made from a blend of silk and linen, brings the softness and subtlety of the palest lilacs to your shoulders. The unusual weaving pattern throughout this shawl is reminiscent of the buds and open flowers on springtime lilac trees.

These two fibers, one soft, one crisp, create a marvelous synergy that brings out the best of each of them. Both are very breathable, so you'll magically stay cool when it's warm, warm when it's cool.

This hand made shawl is 17" wide and 72" long, plus double-twisted fringe on both ends. For best results, I recommend hand washing this shawl in cool water and laying it flat to dry. You can press it with a warm iron if desired, or dry clean if you prefer.

eggshell cotton lace handwoven shawl

Eggshell Cotton Lace Handwoven Shawl

Handwoven lace delights the eye. It surprises most people - is that shawl really woven on a loom? Are you sure it's not crocheted or knitted? You can be sure of the answer with this shawl, handwoven on a vintage floor loom in my rural, upstate New York home/studio. To make it even more special, this particular shawl was woven on a loom that was made by hand more than half a century ago!

Cotton is comfortable and easy to both wear and care for. The neutral color of this handwoven shawl means that it will pair beautifully with anything you choose. Click on the above image and you'll get a full view of how well it drapes. This mid-weight cotton offers a bit of warmth while it remains airy and open.

This hand made shawl is 17" wide and 72" long, plus double-twisted fringe on both ends. For best results, I recommend hand washing this shawl in warm water and laying it flat to dry. You can fluff it in the dryer or press it with a warm iron if desired, or dry clean if you prefer.
